For
information on how to care for poinsettias so they will flower next year
see the article "Poinsettias" at www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/Garden/07412.html. |

Christmas
cactus plants prefer bright, indirect sunlight, and they require light to moderate
water. Fertilize plants every
7-10 days with a liquid fertilizer while they are growing or in bloom. |

 |
Colorado's
low humidity combined with heat from the furnace can rapidly dry out
houseplants in winter. Check plants regularly to see if they need
water. On the other hand, avoid over-watering plants. Too much
water can lead to plant diseases or pests such as fungus gnats. |

Trees, shrubs and lawns are likely to require winter watering
this month. If there has been little or no snow for four to six
weeks, water plants when the ground isn’t frozen and the temperature is
above freezing. |
|
|
 |
Dry
winds, fluctuating temperatures and insufficient water can cause the
needles of evergreens to turn brown in winter.
To prevent winter injury, water plants monthly and place mulch over
the root zone of plants. |
|
|
 |
Cut
off branches from your Christmas tree and use them to cover flower beds
during the winter. Like mulch, the branches limit the effects of
freeze/thaw cycles. |
|
|
 |
Keep
living Christmas trees well watered, both before and after planting.
They may also benefit from being sprayed with a product such as Wilt-pruf
to prevent evaporation of needed moisture.
